Stitches That Heal, Quilt Club Creates One-of-a-Kind Gifts for Wounded Veterans The Boyd Quilters are using their talents to ease the emotional wounds of overseas troops who are receiving hospital care in the Pittsburgh Veterans Hospital in Oakland, the Bethesda Hospital, and the Walter Reed Memorial Hospital in Maryland with the creation and distribution of one-of-a-kind" lap quilts. (PRWEB) March 3, 2005 -- The group has gathered each Thursday morning at the Boyd Community Center in OHara for 21 years to share their passion for this traditional fiber art. They are dedicating the first meeting of each month to working on the lap quilts. The colorful and artfully made blankets are either distributed locally or to Washington D.C. veterans through a Virginia-based quilting club.
Terry Carmen of The Boyd Quilters says, I learned through a friend that there are a number of overseas troops returning daily for admission in local and Maryland hospitals. We enjoy quilting so much. We like using this time to help others." This Thursday, March 3, the group will continue their work on approximately 30 quilts. The Quilters plan to carry on the project indefinitely.
Members of The Boyd Quilters vary in experience and interest, but each share a love of quilting. Most of their energy is spent working on individual projects, but they often collaborate on special projects and fund-raising raffle quilts. Anyone with a love of fabric is welcome to join their group.
The Boyd Center has been a key resource in the community for twenty one years. The center provides educational, cultural, recreational, and social opportunities for individuals of all ages. For more information about The Quilters and other programs at the Boyd Center call 412-828-8566 ext. 11.
