First IRS Real Property Sale Via Live Internet Auction - The Historic Redstone Castle in Colorado

Alliance Commerces BidLive to be used in another first of its kind auction event for the IRS.

This auction is another first for the federal agency, as it will utilize Alliance Commerces BidLive Live auction simulcasting technology to invite bidders from around the world to place bids on the historic Redstone Castle in Colorado on March 19th, 2005. The castle and its highly treasured antiques, carriage house and out buildings sit on approximately 150 acres of real estate.

The Treasury Department was highly successful in their first ever, seized personal property Internet auction using BidLive in December of 2004. From the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City, about $9 million of seized diamonds, formerly owned by Ponzi scheme artist, Martin Frankel, were sold at auction with Internet bidders contributing to over 45% of the sales. The Treasury Department is hoping for similar results in the sale of the Redstone Castle in the coming weeks.

The castle was built at the turn of the 20th century by coal and steel baron John Cleveland Osgood along the Crystal River about 20 miles west of Aspen. The Internal Revenue Service seized the Redstone properties in March 2003 when it discovered that they were purchased with funds from a $56 million fraud scheme. Proceeds from the auction will compensate victims of the alleged scheme.
