Statement of Need:

Atypical antipsychotics offer significant advantages over the older conventional agents in the treatment of schizophrenia and a wide range of psychotic disorders. As these newer agents steadily improve outcomes, the bar for expectations is raised accordingly. Clinicians recognize that there are unique differences in the pharmacological profiles and the tolerability of the different atypical antipsychotics that impact individual patient outcomes. Optimal switching paradigms consider appropriate dosing strategies, the effect on residual symptoms, improvement in mood and cognition, and side effect management. In this psychCME TV activity, the experts will examine the evidence and their clinical experience to determine when switching makes sense on the pathway to improved patient outcomes.
