Renowned Course at Boars Head Inn Receives a Facelift Course Set to Re-Open April 2, 2005

Boars Head Inns Birdwood Golf Course was recently renovated to continue challenging players and evolve with the changing game of golf. Birdwood, consistently rated among the top courses in Virginia and called one of the top must play" courses in the Mid-Atlantic by Washington Golf Styles, is slated to re-open for play on April 2, 2005.

(PRWEB) March 24, 2005 -- Boars Head Inns Birdwood Golf Course was recently renovated to continue challenging players and evolve with the changing game of golf. Birdwood, consistently rated among the top courses in Virginia and called one of the top must play" courses in the Mid-Atlantic by Washington Golf Styles, is slated to re-open for play on April 2, 2005.

Every one of the bunkers at Birdwood Golf Course has been totally redesigned and reshaped by representatives of acclaimed golf course designer, Pete Dye, to improve play and continue to challenge players. In addition, all of the bunkers received new, high quality, white sand, providing for more consistent play.

According to Tim Liddy, an associate of Pete Dye, Birdwood represents one of the most spectacular settings of any golf course we have worked on. The bunkering work weve done here emulates the Donald Ross old school, handcrafted look and harkens back to the early days of golf course design. The new bunkering will also place a greater emphasis on the golfers 'risk/reward strategy."

In addition to the bunkering work, the approach area around all 18 greens have been re-shaped, re-mounded, and re-sodded with bluegrass. Along with the greens, bunkers, and improved drainage work to the course, Birdwood also installed and upgraded greenside irrigation on all 18 holes.

These renovations continue an ongoing project to Birdwood begun in 2004 with a major upgrade to the Birdwood Grill as well as to both the mens and womens locker facilities.

Birdwood Golf Course is rich in history. Its verdant hills were part of a 1739 upland wilderness" land patent, one of the earliest in the colony. In 1819, Birdwood Pavilion was constructed by the same craftsman who built the Rotunda at the University of Virginia. Over time, the propertys prized farmland became a top producer of Hereford cattle and prizewinning show horses.

The University of Virginia acquired the property in 1974, enlisting architect Lindsay Ervin in 1984 to transform Birdwood into the par-72 championship golf course it is today. Birdwood is home to the Universitys Mens and Womens Golf Teams.
