Detainment of Anti US Slavery Advocate Postponed for Hearing

Connecticut local mental health professionals view anti US slavery advocate's work as "a complex delusional system regarding 'modern-day slavery, human trafficking, abductions and organized crime' " and justification for detainment

(PRWEB) March 26, 2005 -- OCE's recommended 3/11/05 detainment of anti-slavery activist, Marianne LaBrecque, has been postponed pending a 4/5/05 hearing of defendant's contesting of findings. The judge also said that it was unfair to give the defendant such little time to make arrangements to prepare to undergo 60 days of "inpatient hospitalization." Detainment would be as a pretrial detainee at Connecticut Valley Hospital, Connecticut's facility for the "criminally insane."

Ct Superior Court's Office of Court Evaluation's conclusion is that the defendant "demonstrated what appeared to be a complex delusional system regarding 'modern-day slavery, human trafficking, abductions and organized crime'... Her preoccupation with modern-day slavery and the abduction of her fiancée, and her propensity to focus on these issues in a tangential, circumstantial manner, impairs her capacity to represent herself, to work collaboratively with an attorney, to follow testimony, and to effectively participate in her case. Furthermore, her certainty that the local police departments, the prosecutor and the judge are involved in the aforementioned 'conspiracies' significantly impairs her capacity to rationally understand her legal situation."

LaBrecque says that much of the report, such as this last statement, refers to statements that she did not make, and other parts of the report include statements she made but, in the report, are pasted together out of context and in a manner that would cause a reader to assume that she is irrational.

She states that OCE's report is consistent with what was reported, and similar to the manner of reporting her statements and behavior, of that to which she refers as the "Pond House incident," covered in a 1/28/05 press release. The following are taken directly from those medical records:

· Diagnosis: delusional disorder

· Indications: expressing delusional material, i.e., alien slavery

· Primary problem (reason for detainment): "I became detained unjustifiably and I want restitution"

· Present illness: getting involved in trying 'to have major crimes investigated'

· Discharge criteria: Pt. will report "V" in delusional thinking and a "V" in psychosis " ("V" being an arrow pointing down)

LaBrecque managed to be discharged from Pond House "against medical advice" after 9 days of detainment. She suspects that the discharge criteria for her release from CVH will be the same and, as such, her detainment could continue indefinitely.

She also reports that this response to her current anti slavery activities is what she has experienced from most mental health and many law enforcement personnel since August 2002, when she began appealing for investigation into possible local human trafficking activities. Although, during interview, mental health professionals have, for example, categorized the perpetrators as sociopaths and told LaBrecque that they think she is involved in a "very worthwhile cause," those same people have later admitted to LaBrecque that, regarding those activities, they "have to say" that LaBrecque is delusional, often adding paranoid and/or hallucinating.

This is some of what has motivated LaBrecque to make advocacy against modern-day slavery her current mission, describing that as:

1) Increasing public awareness of this crime, including education of law enforcement, to promote identification of possible victims, schemes being used by perpetrators, and gaps in the infrastructure enabling proliferation of this crime

2) Continuing to push for effective investigation of possible local situations relating to these crimes.
