With greater understanding of the behavior of airborne-transmitted bacteria and viruses, new devices and processes are necessary to combat infection. Infectious agents such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and SARS were once thought to be strictly surface contaminants; however, new evidence suggests that both of these may have an important airborne component of their transmission.
