Sunshine Factory Presents "Floating Over the F Train: Visions of Home"

An Exhibit of Allegorical Landscapes by Tina Gauthier

(PRWEB) April 11, 2005

Sunshine Factory is delighted to present Floating Over the F Train: Visions of Home, a selection of allegorical landscapes by Brooklyn-based artist Tina Gauthier.

With cartoon-like images, reminiscent of those fashioned by the late Philip Guston, Floating Over the F Train: Visions of Home synthesizes the dreams and memories of Gauthier’s native landscape of Watertown, Connecticut with the images of the Lower East Side and Brooklyn, her current habitat.

Among the recognizable emblems in the artist’s landscapes are bits of human and animal heads juxtaposed with a flotsam of garbage amidst bits of buildings, trees and starry nights. Combining the illusions of the artist’s imagination with the reality of her surroundings, Gauthier playfully explores the interplay between the two.

Searching for the feeling of home while in a state of transition, the artist deftly plays with the notion of floating while seeking to maintain equilibrium between gravity and balance.

Challenging the viewer with such fundamental issues as: What is home? Who am I? What is happening around us? Why is this happening? Gauthier’s recent paintings intrigue and enchant.

The recipient of a Masters of Fine Arts from Rutgers University, Tina Gauthier has exhibited her work in both solo and group shows in New York, New Jersey, Austria and New Zealand.

Floating Over the F Train: Visions of Home opens on April 4 and continues until June 5. A reception for the artist will be held on Sunday, April 17 4-6 pm.

The gallery is located at 11 Essex Street between Canal and Hester Streets. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 8am to 5pm and Sunday 9am to 5pm or by appointment.
