A call of the wild will be heard again when three gibbons will get a NEW CHANCE after a life of captivity!!
After years of care and hard effort The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project in Phuket, Thailand is on the verge of what can best described as an the first step in reintroducing three White-Handed Gibbons (Hylobates Lar), by translocating them onto to an semi-wild uninhabitated island in a National Park reserve in Phang Nga Bay, a short distance off the eastern coast of Phuket.
The Gibbon release: During the months of February /March 2001
The Thai and volunteer staff have completed an important phase of the rehabilitation with the construction of an effective off shore feeding system which will minimize the contact between Gibbon and human. Because in the first years they will still be partly dependent on extra feeding because the gibbons still need to learn how to find food in the wild.
After a couple of years we will hopefully be able to reintroduce them in one of Thailands National Forests.
We are making this request for help to the Nature Film and Network Media to record this impending and unique Gibbon release and help us illustrate the important progress that has been made in protecting the Gibbon and its forests of Thailand and South East Asia.
Some background information:
THE GIBBON REHABILITATION PROJECT Bang Pae Waterfall, Phuket Island, Thailand The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project was founded in 1992, by American Zoologist Terrence Dillon Morin. Terrence Dillon Morin (TD), was then living on Phuket Island had become increasingly concerned about the plight of Gibbon in general and the exploitation of Gibbons kept in tourist bars in particular. From an initial two gibbons rescued by TD, the centre has grown into a full scale reintroduction and research project whose aim is to release bonded pairs of Lar Gibbons (Hylobates Lar) onto to a managed island reserve in Phang Nga Bay, a short distance off the eastern coast of Phuket. Aside from this pioneering work the project also highlights the plight of Gibbon to the visitors of the centre and to help them understand this remarkable primate and it's importance to Thailand's rich environment. The project's work in fighting for the protection of the Gibbon, one of our closest living relatives, we are working to help ensure it's continued existence and the existence of it's habitat. The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project is funded mostly by our volunteers and is in need of assistance in publicizing and recording this pending release. Please help us spread the word of this essential work and the noteworthy accomplishments. Thank You.
