Every art educator raised their hand when asked if their students were interested in manga, the Japanese version of comic illustration and storytelling. This recognition confirmed for Sakura of America (Sakura), the manga workshop sponsor, its goal of encouraging teachers to utilize manga as a vehicle to engage students in learning core drawing fundamentals, and employ graphic storytelling to enhance literacy, creative writing, and history lessons. Sakura will empower teachers with a condensed version of the workshop at the National Art Educators Association (NAEA) 2009 Conference, located in Minneapolis, MN, April 17 - 21, 2009, booth number 440. Workshop presenters are professional manga artists affiliated with Manga Start, an art education resource that promotes learning art foundations, and provides manga-comic drawing lessons. Volumes one through four of the Manga Start Basic Fundamental Drawing lessons and accompanying lesson plans will be given to NAEA educators attending the workshop. "The collaboration between Manga Start and Sakura stemmed from a common desire to provide resources for art education," states Phuong-Mai Bui-Quang, Founder of Manga Start and Creative Director of P.M.B.Q. Studios. "The goal of our consortium of manga artists is to promote manga illustration based on a traditional fine art education. We saw the educator's light bulb go on when we explained how to use manga to teach basic drawing, character development, and storytelling techniques."
