Outfoxed Reaches 200,000 DVD Sales; Tie-in Book Debuts "Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism" sells 200,000 units. The film's book tie-in released this week. New York, NY (PRWEB) April 20, 2005 -- Robert Greenwald's "Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism," along with Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," was the standout documentary of 2004. Released on DVD by The Disinformation Company in July 2004, "Outfoxed" immediately became the #1 selling DVD on Amazon.com. The film passed a significant milestone by moving 100,000 units in less than three weeks after its release, beating out major studio contenders such as the "Star Wars Trilogy." Sales have now passed 200,000 units, considered a large number for a documentary on DVD, proving that the film continues to strike a chord with audiences worldwide.
Since its release, "Outfoxed" has garnered much press coverage. Most recently, the media widely reported that ABC had censored any reference to Fox News Channel in a recent episode of "Boston Legal" - an episode that featured clips from "Outfoxed" in a courtroom scene. It was also revealed that ABC refused to sell commercial airtime during the program to The Disinformation Company, which had tried to place an ad for "Outfoxed."
Despite Fox News Channel's attempts at damage control, the focus on the network as a right-wing propaganda machine remains strong and criticism continues. Recently, after off-air audiotape was obtained, media reports exposed Sean Hannitys alleged coaching of two of Terri Schiavo's former nurses during their appearance on "Hannity and Colmes" on March 31st. Additionally, the quality of Foxs news reports have again come into question after the network issued a premature report of the death of Pope John Paul II before being retracted with an apology from anchor Shepard Smith.
Further fueling the fire is the new "Outfoxed" book, to be released by The Disinformation Company on April 21st. In the book, journalist Alexandra Kitty continues the investigation of Fox News Channel where Producer/Director Robert Greenwalds documentary film sensation left off, digging deeper into Rupert Murdochs media empire and its dumbing down of the news.
The book's release was kicked off with a Salon.com promotion in which "Outfoxed" was offered as a giveaway to potential Premium Salon subscribers. According to Max Garrone, VP of Operations for the Salon Media Group, "Salon has been very interested in 'Outfoxed' since the DVD came out because it was quite a sensation with our audience. Our audience loves 'Outfoxed' because they feel Fox has been distorting the news while brandishing a facetious tag line."
According to The Disinformation Companys President Gary Baddeley, "'Outfoxed' is proving to be more than just a successful documentary - its changing the media landscape by making it known very loudly and very clearly that Fox News Channel is anything but an objective source of news. We all owe Robert Greenwald and his partners on the film, MoveOn.org and Center for American Progress, a huge thank you."
Robert Greenwald, whose new attack ad aimed at Governor Schwarzenegger aired at last weekend's state Democratic convention in Los Angeles, has acknowledged both the "Boston Legal" censorship as well as the vilification of "Outfoxed" by Fox News Channel as key components to the film reaching the 200,000 sales mark: "I am astounded at having passed 200,000 in sales on the DVD and I want to express my appreciation and thanks to Bill OReilly and all the folks at Fox News who have attacked us and made this milestone possible."
