Mind-Body Medicine for Women: The Chopra Center to Offer Holistic Healing Workshop Addressing Women's Unique Health Care Needs

This Mother's Day weekend, the Chopra Center invites all women to learn the practical tools of mind-body healing at the Women's Health Workshop. Integrative physician Valencia Porter and Eastern healing arts expert Fay McGrew will teach participants how to create greater health and emotional wellbeing, including the keys to staying balanced and calm in stressful times.

Carlsbad, California (PRWEB) April 27, 2009 -- This Mother's Day weekend the Chopra Center in Carlsbad, California will present a mind-body healing (http://www.chopra.com) workshop for women, led by the Center's Director of Women's Health - Valencia Porter, M.D. - and medical qigong expert Fay McGrew. At the May 9 event, participants will learn about an integrative approach to women's health that combines the most recent developments in medical science with the healing practices of Ayurveda (http://www.chopra.com), Chinese medicine, and other ancient traditions.

"In Western medicine, most treatments are prescribed according to a one-size-fits-all approach that doesn't acknowledge the inherent differences between men's and women's bodies. Only within the past few years has the medical field started to look at how disease affects men and women differently," said Dr. Porter.

"In contrast, traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic (Indian) medicine (http://www.chopra.com) have long-standing traditions of utilizing different approaches for women versus men, even for the same health challenge. This May at our workshop, we'll share an individualized approach to women's health," added Dr. Porter.

At the Women's Health workshop, Dr. Porter will guide participants in mind-body therapies for improving physical health and emotional balance, focusing specifically on women and their health concerns, including heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, and depression. She will also discuss holistic approaches (http://www.chopra.com) to food and nutrition, exercise recommendations, stress management, and coping with fatigue.

In addition, master instructor Fay McGrew will teach attendees basic Yin Qigong - a gentle, easy-to-learn technique that offers numerous proven health benefits. For more than a decade, she has offered medical qigong classes throughout San Diego, including the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine; Scripps Center for Community Health and Advocacy, the University of California San Diego Medical Center, and the San Diego Cancer Center Research Institute.

"Yin Qigong focuses on cultivating a woman's unique energy body. There is nothing more exhilarating than unlocking feminine energy through Yin Qigong," said Fay. "It is like finally having a drink of refreshing water after being in a desert of mind-body practices geared mainly for the male body and masculine energies."

The workshop takes place Saturday, May 9, from noon to 3:30pm at the Chopra Center in Carlsbad.

Tickets are $60.
