Diff-rent Blokes: Introducing Arnold Jackson

Chicago rock band arnold jackson releases first LP, GO! CITY, on Record High Records.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) May 5, 2005 -- They made you wait for it, those obstinate bastards, but GO! CITY, the first full-length from Chicago rockers arnold jackson, has finally arrived.

Released April 1, 2005 on Record High Records, GO! CITY is a 12-song meditation (yes, you can growl while you meditate) on magic and loss in the city of Big Shoulders and broken backs.

The LP was recorded for less than $200 (at Stray Dog Recording Studios), yet it's rich with riffs on the water theme (as in songs "elixir six," "frigates," and "the frozen sea"). As for their sound? It's a little bit Iggy, a little bit James Brown, with some White Stripes down their back.

But perhaps you know all this... Heard them on WLUW's Radio Free Chicago, did you? Then you're hip to the fact that then-host Jed James named their Black Arts EP one of his top releases of 2002.

arnold jackson had been playing out just a year at that point -- and were promising to disband any second. You see, the trio's roots are in the graduate student housing of Chicago's south side. It was there Black Bryson (vocals/guitar), sister Kim Drummond (bass) and pal Shoaf (drums) first united with one goal: to play the Empty Bottle, then promptly quit.

But then Kim took off for Hollywood, and James Spence, a classical guitarist with an ear for indie rock and Led Zeppelin, took up the bass. This threesome have now played the Bottle twice -- and they're not done yet.

Soon, however, soon...

While fans bow before GO! CITY, the men are already hard at work on their final album, called The world is ugly and the people are sad, after a line in Wallace Stevens' poem "Gubbinal." To be recorded at Million Yen Studios (Local H, Cheap Trick), the last disc is set for a late summer release.

Then the men of arnold jackson will return to their respective ugly, non-rock worlds: Black Bryson publishing fiction and conquering search marketing in Chicago, James Spence (Baur) pursuing his Ph.D. in classical guitar at Northwestern University and (Matt) Shoaf playing professor at a liberal arts college near Philadelphia.

You're gonna love their GO! CITY. You'll grieve for the beauty of The world is ugly and the people are sad. And then they'll disappear, with no syndication, no nothing but the discs to remember them by.

Like I said: Bastards.
