South Of the Navy Yard Artists has the pleasure of announcing their line up for the SONYA 2005 JAMfest/Fundraiser scheduled for June 11, 2005 at the Five Spot Supper Club, Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, NY. D-XTREME, Kevin So, Maritri, and MindThirst will be setting the place on fire with the best music Brooklyn has to offer.

South of the Navy Yard Artists, Inc. also known as SONYA is a not-for-profit arts organization that sponsors programs each year featuring the visual arts and artists of Fort Greene, Clinton Hill and Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. To help support these programs SONYA presents music performances that brings people to the visual arts, showcasing the stellar talent of Brooklyn musicians along with a visual arts exhibition in their annual fundraiser, the SONYA JAMfest. For the 2nd year, The Five Spot will be hosting the event on June 11, 7PM – Midnight. Suggested donation is $15 in advance and $20 at the door.

D-XTREME, Kevin So, Maritri, and MindThirst have donated their energy and music to helping this event achieve success and our financial goal.

Summary of Event:

SONYA (South of the Navy Yard Artists) will be hosting one of the Best Music Event of the summer, the SONYA JAMfest 2005.

The musicians are:

Maritri - "Maritri is ... approaches music with such delicate poignancy. her voice is soothing yet haunting. Her playing style shows a great deal of passion for the French Impressionist as well as jazz. Southern California born and bred, Maritri has found her way to New York as a pianist, vocalist, arranger, and composer. She opened for Gladys Knight, The Five Blind Boys of Alabama, Stanley Jordan, Toshi Reagon, Hiram Bullock, Muzz Skillins, Vinx and the Indigo Girls with her band Hue.She has recently played with Vernon Reid, Sonya Sanchez, Ani Di Franco and Nona Hendryx."

Kevin So - "Kevin So is ... Carving his songs from sweet r&b, hot rock, hip-hop, and folk-pop, he presents his life and times in brash strokes of insight, wit, and empathy, all underscored by a deeply felt pride in being both Asian and American. So has been nominated 8 times for the Boston Music Awards and has opened for some of the industry's best known acts including Joe Cocker, Randy Newman, Richie Havens, Billy Bragg, Mary Lou Lord, Boz Scaggs, Livingston Taylor, Ellis Paul, Martin Sexton, Chris Smither, and Dar Williams. MindThirst - "MindThirst is a Brooklyn based band with a touch of deep alternative Indie soul flavored with the influences of Bjork and Sade meets the Chili Peppers and Goo Goo Dolls and a taste of good feeling with on the guitar, it’s a blend of new wave, pop, jazz, blues, rock, and good punk offers a unique sound."

D-XTREME "D-XTREME are the Original Fort Greene Bed-Stuy PowerFunksters with the collective influences ranging from and remind you not limited to such bands like Bad Brains, Parliament funkadelic, James Brown, Kiss, Sun Ra, Thelonious Monk, Romare Bearden, Duke Ellington, Kool And The Gang, Langston Hughes, Earth Wind and Fire, Black Sabbath. D-XTREME has supported: Fishbone, 24-7 Spyz, Goo Goo Dolls, Primus, Mud Honey, Gang Starr." True Black American music from the Socio-political point of view.

This is going to be one powerful energy and fun filled night and the bands are performing to help keep the arts alive and vibrant in these communities.

In addition to their performances, the bands will be donating 2 tracks each to an art-enhanced Compilation CD that will include artwork presentations from SONYA with 100% of the proceeds going to support the Not for Profit Organization, South of the Navy Yard Artists and their fine art gallery, ElevenTen Gallery.
