National Homeless Non Profit Is "Bringing It Home"

'Give Us Your Poor Launches 2nd National Dinner Series Initiative with Local Event

Boston, MA (PRWEB) May 6, 2005 -- Give Us Your Poor: Homelessness & the U.S., a national project based at UMass Boston, launched the Bringing It Home" dinner party series with a kick-off event Tuesday, April 5 at the University of Massachusetts Boston. The launch event invited people across the country to actively engage in building awareness of homelessness in the United States. Among those attending was special guest Keith Motley, Chancellor of UMass Boston. The kickoff also unveiled new film footage of the feature-length documentary film in the making, narrated by Actor Danny Glover and produced by former HBO, and multi-Emmy winner, Michael Mierendorf. Many of the dinners held across the country will also be in support of the National Coalition for the Homeless, a valued partner to Give Us Your Poor.

Bringing It Home" opens the door of communication within ones community. The series creates an environment conducive to discussion of this troublesome and uncomfortable topic. Hosts agree to hold a dinner party with any number of guests, The Give Us Your Poor project makes it easy by providing all collateral materials including: a video short on homelessness; creation of a personalized web page of your dinner party; and talking points for discussion throughout the evening. Your friends attend and make a donation equal to what they would have paid to dine out.

The initiative is designed to dispel misconceptions of homelessness and explore its root causes with the widest possible audience. Today, over 3.5 million people are homeless, over 1 million of which are children, and many women and children fleeing domestic abuse.

'Give Us Your Poor: Homelessness and the United States aims to create a revolution in public awareness of homelessness. Principle goals include exploring structural causes and introduce into American consciousness solutions that are achievable through the power of involvement. Give Us Your Poor components include a nationally televised documentary film, a service-learning curriculum on homelessness and community action forums in local communities. It is based on the premise that homelessness is preventable but systematic change requires public understanding and will to implement it.
