realpanama.org, Website for the Prisoners of the Panamanian Jail La Joyita, Starts Operations

www.realpanama.org proposes to keep the world informed about the real situation of those detained in Panama and will be presenting the news that authorities keep under tabs, and the press ignores.

(PRWEB) May 16, 2005 -- www.realpanama.org, website of those imprisoned in Panamanian Penal System, started operations on the first of May of 2005.

Back in 1996, a report from the Fellowship of Reconciliation informed that conditions in Panama's jails were "medieval" and "degrading", and the situation has remarkably deteriorated ever since.

Alarmed by the lack of attention by the Government of Panama towards the problems of prison overcrowding, lack of optimal nutrition, air time, and the supply of drinking water, www.realpanama.org was created by a group of concerned citizens to combat these evils that ail the Panamanian prison system.

With over 3,000 visitors in the first ten days of operation, www.realpanama.org is positioning itself to be the premier site to find out about the Panamanian Penal System.

www.realpanama.org has garnered attention from important media outlets in Panama, such as Diario El Siglo, RPC Radio and others.

This website from the prisoners of La Joyita includes pictures of panamanian jails, budget statistics from the Panamanian Penal System and from other countries, proposals to better the administration of justice in Panama, lively discussion boards, chat functions, and many more options found in any top rated community discussion forum.

www.realpanama.org faces serious difficulties in its task, as Panama is considered to have a High Corruption Index at government and state levels, with serious threats to freedom of expression, due to existing legislation known as "The Gag Laws", which affect the free exercise of freedom of the press.

To date, realpanama.org presents over 60 news items, and 12 topics, updated daily with comments about the situation of inmates in the country of Panama, including contributions both for and against the opinions expressed in the web site by users themselves.

The administrators of realpanama.org pointed out that their task is to expose any uncaring or corrupted government attitudes in all aspects pertaining to the Panamanian Penal System, including the lack of implementation of Law 55.

www.realpanama.org uses a novel Blog-type system to accept contributions from its users, maintaining the anonymity of whistleblowers, but at the same time keeping rule and decorum.

www.realpanama.org expects high traffic and awaits the posibility of support by Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) and from individuals concerned with the success of their task.
