How One Mans Devotion to Canada's Most Neglected Children Led to Receiving Governor General's Meritorious Service Medal

What, she didnt tell the man is that she and her husband Reverend Dr. John Niles have been parents to over 1,000 foster children in the past fifteen years, many times answering their door in the later night hours to the sight of a terrified infant or toddler in the arms of a police officer or social worker.

When the couple learned that very few people were willing to be available 365 days a year, at odd hours to take in abused, abandoned or addicted infants and toddlers, they made a decision to open their hearts and their home.

Since that time, they have cared for over 1,000 children, an average of 85 a year, some with broken arms, cracked skulls, babies going through drug and alcohol withdrawal and other images to horrible to describe. One child, found abandoned in a raid on a crack house, arrived at their door at 3:00 AM terrified and malnourished. Another toddler was found wondering alone in the street and brought to their door.

Along the way John learned important life lessons that he shares in his book How I Became Father to 1000 Children, published by White Knight Publication spring 2005.

Niles travels constantly educating others on the Child Welfare system. He has become a leading advocate for reform of the laws and procedures used by the Child Welfare system.
