The miniature wargaming hobby is part of the "adventure games" hobby, which includes role playing and board games.
Wargamers recreate battles on the tabletop with toy soldiers, like a more complicated game of chess. Models range in height from 6mm to 28mm tall, with 15mm and 25mm being the most popular. It's a hobby that's been around for a long time: the first commercially available set of rules for playing battle games with miniatures was "Little Wars", written by H.G. Wells (of "War of the Worlds" fame) in the early 1900s.
The most popular branch of the hobby focuses on fantasy and science fiction games. But there also is a strong historical miniatures segment; among these, Napoleonics, the American Civil War, and World War II probably are the most popular periods. There also is a very strong group that focuses on playing ancients, such as Romans or Greeks.
But there's more to the hobby than just playing with miniatures. Hobbyists -- especially the historical gamers -- spend countless hours researching historical periods and painting their tiny soldiers in historically accurate uniforms. Others apply their research to developing "realistic" miniatures rules set for playing battle games. Gamers also spend their time building highly realistic scale battlefield terrain using techniques borrowed from model railroaders and plastic modelers. The sculpting and painting of figures has become a fine art form.
Some of the bigger hobby companies are Games Workshop, which produces Warhammer, Wargames Foundry and Old Glory Miniatures.
