gbXML.org is pleased to announce the formation of a new Green Building XML (gbXML) Advisory Board. The independent board is comprised of eleven (11) member companies that all have an interest in maintaining the gbXML schema as an open standard. The schema is the mostly widely used metadata format for transferring intelligent building information to facilitate thermal, energy, carbon, and water analyses associated with buildings. The first meeting of the gbXML Advisory Board was held on April 21, 2009. The following companies were represented: AiRNAB, Autodesk, Bentley, Cadsoft Corporation, Carmel Software, EDSL, Greenspace Research, HVAC Solution, Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES), Trane, and Wrightsoft.

With the development of export and import capabilities in several major engineering modeling tools, gbXML has become a de facto industry standard schema. Its use dramatically streamlines the transfer of building information to and from engineering models, eliminating the need for time consuming plan take-offs. This removes a significant cost barrier to designing resource efficient buildings and specifying associated equipment. It enables building design teams to truly collaborate and realize the potential benefits of Building Information Modeling (BIM).

"The gbXML schema is now 10-years old, and is increasingly being adopted by building engineering and modeling software companies for energy analysis. This can only continue to benefit the architectural and engineering communities as these tools become easier and more powerful to use," said Stephen Roth, Principal of Carmelsoft and the administrator for the gbXML Advisory Board.

"The GSA has an urgent responsibility to make federal buildings into high-performance green buildings. The use of technologies such as BIM and the gbXML schema make it easier to accomplish this monumental task" said Donald Horn, Sustainability Program Director at GSA. "I applaud the formation of the gbXML advisory board and look forward to the continued value that this standard can bring to our needs."

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is adopting BIM for Military Construction projects, is looking at gbXML as an open standard to ensure vendor neutrality in using energy models during early planning and design phases. "Our research to evaluate and test approaches for doing energy analysis at conceptual design found that gbXML is likely to meet our interoperability requirements," said Annette Stumpf, research architect at the Corps' Center for the Advancement of Sustainability Innovations. "The advisory board is an important development and it's promising to see this enthusiastic industry participation."

The board has unique criteria for its members. To be eligible, board members are required to have produced or funded development of a commercially available gbXML product or dataset. Because analysis and modeling technologies are evolving rapidly, the board will work to quickly ratify and enforce a gbXML charter, govern the process for updating the gbXML schema, as well as guide the future direction of the gbXML.

About gbXML
The Green Building XML schema was developed to facilitate the transfer of building information stored in CAD building information models, enabling integrated interoperability between building design models and a wide variety of engineering analysis tools and models available today. Today, gbXML has the industry support and wide adoption by the leading CAD vendors, Autodesk, Graphisoft, and Bentley.
