Springfest 2005 - Raising Money for Union Hospital’s Breast Health Center

Chesapeake Wine & Spirits in Chesapeake City, Maryland, heads up Springfest 2005, a wine-tasting and gourmet restaurant showcase to benefit Union Hospital of Elkton's Breast Health Center. Event takes place June 4th, 2005 from 3-6pm "on the lawn," reservations and info 410-885-5858.

Elkton, MD (PRWEB) May 26, 2005

Breast cancer is the most commonly reported cancer among Maryland women. According to data from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, 3,781 women were diagnosed with invasive female breast cancers in 2000. However, education, prevention and early detection are keys to fighting the disease.

Since opening its Breast Health Center in 2004, Union Hospital of Cecil County has conducted over 5,400 Mammograms and over 400 Breast Ultrasound Exams and Stereotactic Biopsies in its war on Breast Cancer.

By staying up to date with the latest equipment and procedures, the Breast Health Center reduces the wait period for such tests, thereby increasing the chances of detecting breast disease early—the biggest key to saving lives.

Recognizing the benefit of maintaining state-of-the-art technology in this field, several local businesses are coming together to raise money for the Breast Health Center at Springfest 2005, a “taste extravaganza” to include wine tasting, samples of gourmet foods from seven local restaurants, a silent auction and live music.

Chesapeake Wine and Spirits in Chesapeake City, Maryland will be hosting the event outdoors on its lawn on Saturday, June 4th, from 3 to 6pm, and participants will be able to stroll catering tables on the grounds and enjoy tasting over 50 varieties of wine from across the globe, and sample foods from The Bayard House, The Chesapeake Inn, The Granary, The Kitty Knight House, Schaefer’s Canal House and The Village Bakery. Several other local businesses are donating items for the silent auction.

Sally Rifenburg, General Manager of The Kitty Knight House, was involved in the project last year, when proceeds were donated to the David Lokey Horticultural Center. She said it was very well received.

“We had over 350 participants last year, which was the first year for the Springfest, and people really had a wonderful time,” she said. “This year I’m hoping we have a big turnout to support the Breast Health Center. It’s a wonderful cause.”

Susan Beachell, Executive Director of the Union Hospital Foundation, is pleased that Springfest will benefit the Breast Health Center.

“I’m delighted that Chesapeake Wine and Spirits is sponsoring us through this event. As a non-profit foundation, we have received over $132,900 in donations from local businesses for this program, and we are deeply grateful for all the donations we receive.

Tickets are $40 per person, and can be obtained by stopping in or calling Chesapeake Wine and Spirits. Sommelier David Steinbrecher is also taking separate donations for the Breast Health Center, and encourages people to donate even if they cannot make the event.

“We want as many people to donate as possible,” he said. “It’s going to be a great day for a great cause.”
