If You Want To Be a Cowboy… If you long to wear a cowboy hat, chaps, boots and spurs, Paradise Ranch is the place to be this summer. This 102-year-old guest ranch in northern Wyoming offers an authentic western experience complete with horses, cattle, and chuck wagons. "If you want to be a cowboy for a week, you might as well do it in style," says Clay Miller.
Horsemanship: The horseback riding program at Paradise Ranch is extensive. Each guest is custom-fitted with a horse that perfectly matches his or her riding ability. The riding program is very flexible, with a number of choices ranging from two-hour rides, as well as both half-day and full-day rides. Some day rides include lunches packed on mules and cooked along the trail. Rides take place through wildflower-strewn mountain meadows in the surrounding Bighorn National Forest.
Early in the morning, wake to the sound of thundering hooves and steaming nostrils when professional wranglers bring the horses in from the high meadows. Never-ever riders can learn how to handle a horse. Novice riders can practice better horsemanship skills. Experienced riders can compete in team penning exercises where three riders cut a "dogie" from a small herd of cattle while the clock ticks. A barrel racing clinic is another option.
It's Not Always About the Fish: The technique is to stand on the shore of a crystal clear alpine lake surrounded by majestic peaks, and quietly fling a small "fly" on a string out over the water for the fish to strike. The fishing guides at Paradise Ranch teach this technique from what to wear to fly-tying. There are six lakes in the South Piney Drainage, and the Paradise Ranch base camp is at Frying Pan Lake. This camp is 12 miles from the main complex, 4 ½ hours by horseback. The guides handle the livestock, the cooking and the camp chores. The cooking and dining tents have wood floors and the sleeping tents have cots with foam mats and sleeping bags. The other lakes are just a short hike away except for South Piney Lake. South Piney is a 2.5 hour hike to a lake with waterfalls and soaring cliffs, and this lake may see only 20 fishermen a year, allowing the Yellowstone cutthroat trout to reach trophy size.
All-Day Entertainment for the Kids: Games, crafts, nature hikes, pony rides and an overnight camp out are scheduled each day for the younger kids, and children 6 years and up can participate in the regular horse programs which include trail riding with the Ranch wranglers. The Teen program has a Social (movie and ice cream for 13 years and older) and an overnight pack trip. There are field trips off the Ranch, and on Chicken Day, there is a chicken chasing competition before the morning rides. City kids get a chance to breathe clean mountain air and to run and play in wide open spaces as well as learn about Native American history and the customs of ranch life.
Non-Roughing It: Given the gourmet cowboy cuisine and the cozy cabins, visitors certainly are not roughing it. The guests enjoy rich Western hospitality that includes the rustic elegance of a one, two or three bedroom cabin. Each cabin has a fireplace, full bath, full kitchen, washer and dryer, and an outdoor deck. Three hearty meals are served daily in the dining hall. Story-telling and cowboy poetry are recited around a roaring campfire some evenings. Country-western tunes are played in the French Creek Saloon with an old fashioned square dance on the final night.
Whether riding, hiking, fishing, dining or reading on the deck of a cabin, the respite of Paradise Ranch will be complete and memorable. It's a revitalizing opportunity to go back in time to a lifestyle that starts with fresh morning air and offers entertaining outdoor activities until the stars come out. The photos posted at www.paradiseranch.com confirm that experience, which is not a world away from the daily grind, but in Wyoming. It's a doable fantasy escape for the inner cowboy.
