(Vocus) June 6, 2009 -- The Wisconsin Historical Society (http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/) is providing a unique opportunity to experience the entertaining stories, authentic places and hands-on activities at its historic sites. For the first time, all general admission fees will be waived at the Society's seven historic sites on Mondays throughout the month of June 2009.
Wisconsin's seven historic sites (http://www.flickr.com/photos/38978236@N08/) that normally charge admission include Old World Wisconsin, Eagle (Waukesha County); Wade House, Greenbush (Sheboygan County); Villa Louis, Prairie du Chien; Madeline Island Museum, La Pointe; H.H. Bennett Studio, Wisconsin Dells; Pendarvis, Mineral Point; and Stonefield, Cassville. Regular admission will apply at Circus World, in Baraboo, which is operated independently.
"We know families are looking for experiences that provide excellent value and are close to home," said Alicia Goehring, who administers the Society's Division of Historic Sites. "Wisconsin families appreciate the importance of our state's history; now it'll be even easier for them to enjoy the exciting and fun activities happening at our sites this summer."
Each of the historic sites has a unique story to tell about Wisconsin's past. Old World Wisconsin, with its ethnic farmsteads and crossroads village, lets visitors try their hand at farm chores, games and other hands-on activities as well as watch staff in period costume perform as the village blacksmith, shoemaker and innkeeper. Madeline Island Museum celebrates the island's storied past with relics including the oldest structure on Madeline Island. Wade House gives visitors the chance to see and feel the rumble of a working water-powered saw mill -- the only one of its kind in the Midwest. Villa Louis, on the banks of the Mississippi River, offers a guided tour of one of the best Victorian mansion restorations in the country.
The Wisconsin Historical Society, founded in 1846, is committed to helping people connect to the past by collecting preserving and sharing stories.
