Science vs "Junk Science": How to Tell the Difference

As fewer people show signs of critical thinking, superstition, pseudoscience, and quack "medicine" are increasingly popular. Why? How do we "think"?

(PRWEB) June 16, 2005 -- CFI Community of Fort Lauderdale presentation:

Science vs "Junk Science": How to Tell the Difference

Presenter: Jeanette Madea, Ph.D.

Senior Professor of Chemistry, Broward Community College

As our world gets more and more technologically advanced, it seems our citizens are becoming less and less scientifically literate. Popular television shows treat psychic abilities, alleged landings by aliens, and unsupported medical claims as fact. People rush to buy homeopathic medicines and magnets for their shoes. How do we make judgments about what is "real" and what is fantasy? A short presentation will focus on the process of science and how we can feel confident in what we know and dont know. Included will be examples of some serious and some downright silly examples of "bad" science and the potential damage fraudulent ideas can do to society.

The meeting will begin with refreshments and a chance for people to get to know one another. The featured presentation will take about an hour. Following that will be a discussion of future activities for the CFI Community and other questions of interest from those present.
