Ksplice Executives Share New Ways to Make Linux More Secure, Reliable, and Maintainable

Ksplice to highlight advances in software updates at leading Linux conferences in Brazil and Germany. Offer free demonstration version for consumer Linux, available via download.

Cambridge, MA (PRWEB) June 25, 2009 -- Helping Linux administrators and enthusiasts prepare for a new era in software upgrades and systems management, senior executives from Ksplice, an enterprise software company offering to make systems more secure, reliable, and maintainable through seamless updates, will speak this week at two of the world's most prominent Linux conferences-LinuxTag 2009 in Berlin and Fórum Internacional de Software Livre (FISL10) in Brazil.

Jeff Arnold, Ksplice's President, and Waseem Daher, Ksplice's COO, will present on how advances in software update technology make it possible to overcome a widespread limitation that has persisted for four decades since the earliest computer systems. Traditionally, applying an update to the computer code of a running program requires restarting, which is why users of Windows, MacOS, and Linux are commonly prompted to reboot their computers to install updates. The Ksplice technology, originally developed at MIT, makes it possible to convert traditional updates into rebootless updates, which can keep a system up to date and secure without ever rebooting.

In order to demonstrate this technology, Ksplice will begin offering a free demonstration version of its rebootless update service, called Ksplice Uptrack, to consumers running the latest version of the Ubuntu Linux operating system. Computers that are signed up for the Ksplice Uptrack service will receive the same important security updates as other machines, but they will not need to reboot in order to install the updates.

"We're excited that this technology can make systems vastly more secure and maintainable, and launching this service for Ubuntu is an opportunity to start showing many people what our technology can do," said Tim Abbott, Ksplice's CTO. "This consumer release is just the beginning; expect to see general availability of an enterprise product within a few months."
