Paraplegic Takes Leap of Faith for Treatment in India

American Public Media interviewed Rusty Leech of Rusty Without Wheels, the web story of a man with paralysis who has traveled to India for stem cell treatment that he could not receive in the U.S.

Grand Junction, CO (PRWEB) June 29, 2009 -- Rusty Leech, of Rusty Without Wheels, is a paraplegic who has received stem cell treatments in India. His progress is another example of how stem cells can successfully regenerate damaged tissue. He shared his story this week in an interview on American Public Media.

Rusty, 52, has been a paraplegic for more than 10 years. An accident in 1998 left him paralyzed from the middle of his back down. When he learned about India's Dr. Geeta Shroff, who performed embryonic stem cell therapy with successful results, Rusty decided it was worth the effort to raise money for the treatment and the trip to India.

"We couldn't help but trust and believe . . . That leap of faith is still taking me onward and upward."

Since late 2007 Rusty has been to India three times for treatment. He says it's definitely making a difference. Rusty has gained new nerve sensation and some physical functions. He began to have different feelings in the parts of his body that had been paralyzed for more than a decade. "My body continues to miraculously improve," says Rusty.

The travel and treatments are financially draining. Thus far, Rusty's family and friends have rallied to help him raise funds for his expenses. He knows that kind of help can't be expected, especially amid this difficult economy.

Rusty's advice to others who face challenges like this: "Don't give up hope! Instead, look forward to wellness."
