Washington DC Metro Train Crash Raises Issues About Commuter Train Safety

Washington, DC (PRWEB) June 25, 2009 -- Traverse Legal, PLC Attorneys are investigating the Washington Metro commuter train crash, which occurred on June 22, 2009 at approximately 5:00 p.m. EST on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Red Line between the Takoma and Fort Totten Metrorail stations.

There is already information that the trains in-question were two months over due for regular maintenance on their break systems, and that the WMATA had ignored warnings from the National Highway Transportation Safety Association (NHTSA) to replace these "series 1000" trains because they were outdated and no longer considered crashworthy. These commuter trains are operated by computers. It is unclear how the automated stop systems failed to activate or preclude this rear-end collision which killed 9 train passengers and injured dozens of others. This is the second serious commuter train accident in the last twelve months. A Los Angeles Metro Link commuter train outside of Los Angeles, California on September 12, 2008 killed 25 and injured many more.
