Apodis Publishing Inc. Opens Doors

Science Fiction subsidy publisher aims to be an author-focused alternative in the print-on-demand publishing sector.

(PRWEB) July 12, 2005 -- Unlike many new authors who turn to print-on-demand (POD) companies to publish their first novels, Cavan Terrill never expected the bestseller lists to be within his reach. I'd done all the research," Terrill says. I knew I'd have to put in a lot of hard work to sell even a hundred copies."

Even so, he was disappointed with the realities of POD publishing. The technology has great promise," he says. It allows for great books that don't fit into the marketing plans of traditional publishers to finally make it to market. Unfortunately, many of the companies providing this service seem to focus solely on publishing as many titles as they possibly can, regardless of the value to the reader."

In March 2005, Terrill founded Apodis Publishing on the principles of quality and close author-publisher relations. Publishing only one genre allows for both of these principles to be fulfilled. With a smaller number of titles, Apodis will be able to communicate with each of its authors on a regular basis, something most POD companies can't lay claim to," he says. Apodis will also aim for a high standard of quality in its titles. While many POD companies will publish whatever is submitted to them, from fiction to cookbooks to self-help, Apodis will stick to science fiction, the genre it knows best. Additionally, manuscripts will be screened for quality. If an author can't string a sentence together, their work will not be published by Apodis."

Apodis opened for submissions in early July and Terrill is hopeful that science fiction writers looking at publishing via the POD route will consider the fledgling company. He admits, however, that many unpublished writers are uninterested in that route. Their concerns are very much justified. The reputation of the industry has indeed been given a bad name, mostly stemming from the fact that absolutely anyone who has put pen to paper can have a book published. Escaping that reputation won't be an easy feat," he remarks. By equating itself with quality, though, Apodis has a great chance. I think readers will come to respect that."
