Albany, NY (PRWEB) July 16, 2009 -- The New York DMV Internet Point and Insurance Reduction Program celebrates its two month anniversary on Saturday, July 18, in providing New Yorkers online defensive driving courses for insurance and point reduction.

Initially launched on May 18 and previously available only in the classroom, the American Safety Council's online New York Defensive Driving course was the first course approved by the DMV. Drivers can complete the course online to receive a 10% reduction, for three years, in the base rate of their current automobile liability, no-fault and collision premiums. Additionally, drivers are eligible to receive up to a four point reduction on their driving record upon completion of the course. This program is available for drivers of any age at www.NewYorkInternetSchool.com.

"This course offers real savings for New Yorkers," said Bob Proechel, president of the American Safety Council. "Take a 6-hour online course and lower your car insurance payments for three years. Your age or driving history does not prevent you from enjoying these benefits. Plus, if you've received a ticket in the last 18 months, you can reduce up to four points on your driving record."

On June 5, the State of New York Insurance Department issued Circular Letter No. 14 to inform insurers of the new program. This letter states the program now allows for DMV approved courses delivered through the Internet. The American Safety Council's DMV approved course qualifies "…for the statutorily mandated APC [accident prevention course discount per New York Insurance Law §2336."

When students complete the course, the American Safety Council sends a certificate of completion to the student and electronically notifies the DMV. Students must present the completion certificate to his or her insurance company to receive the insurance reduction. The DMV automatically reduces the driver's record by up to four points as applicable.

The American Safety Council's online defensive driving course provides traffic safety information that is specific to New York laws and teaches defensive driving strategies. Drivers are not required to complete a final exam or any proctored testing. The course is available entirely online, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The American Safety Council offers its online New York Defensive Driving course at www.NewYorkInternetSchool.com. ASC and its affiliated organizations offer online traffic and workplace safety training, governmental services and professional continuing education programs, in association with state and federal regulatory agencies and court systems.
