What is Fragile X?

Fragile X syndrome is the most common inherited form of mental retardation and has been identified as the most common know cause of autism. In addition to mental impairment, children with fragile X syndrome typically have a characteristic group of symptoms including physical features, specific behavior patterns, developmental delays, and speech/language delays. A mother or a father can be a carrier and both males and females can be affected. Approximately 1 in 250 women and 1 in 800 men carry the fragile X mutation. A DNA blood test exists that is more than 99% accurate. Early diagnosis is important since interventions can improve the lives of those affected.

A recently discovered neurological condition called fragile X-associated tremor ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) affects approximately one-third of male carriers above the age of 50. The condition is often misdiagnosed ass Parkinsons disease.
