Vaisala Continues to Provide Lightning Data to U.S. National Weather Service

The National Weather Service (NWS) has chosen Vaisala Group as its supplier of lightning information for a contract term of five years. The contract includes Vaisalas U.S. National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN), the leading lightning information system tracking cloud-to-ground lightning activity across the continental United States.

(PRWEB) August 4, 2005 -- The National Weather Service (NWS) has chosen Vaisala Group as its supplier of lightning information for a contract term of five years. The contract includes Vaisalas U.S. National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN), the leading lightning information system tracking cloud-to-ground lightning activity across the continental United States. New services for NWS include additional coverage over regions with exceptional weather phenomena and cloud lightning detection in critical areas for improving nowcasting.

The NWS, a line office of the U.S. National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), provides weather, hydrologic, and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, adjacent waters and ocean areas. NWS data and products form a national information database and infrastructure, which can be used by other governmental agencies, the private sector, the public, and the global community.
