Kitty Shepherd creates decorative pots that cross the boundaries of craft into art. She combines the traditional skills of pot making with highly contemporary designs -- such as for new exhibits 'My Little Pony, with images of her own Harley Davidson motorcycle, and 'Dyson Amphora, featuring the distinctive vacuum cleaner.

Turner prize-winner Grayson Perry - the potter who has a female alter ego called Claire -- is credited with bringing to popular attention what is in fact one of the earliest forms of English decorated and glazed earthenware pottery, dating back to the 16th century.

Each piece at Kitty Shepherds exhibition is hand built using red earthenware and covered in colored slips and captured in transparent glaze. Slip provides a thick, opaque color, similar to oil paint in use: clay is thinned down with water to a liquid paste and then applied to an unfired clay pot; the work is slow and meticulous.

Kitty Shepherd says, The new exhibition features 20 new pieces that celebrate every day experience of the world. Some of the images are bizarre, some are humorous, and all are beautiful. My craft is the dexterous skill of working with slip, while my art is in the creative expression of natural and iconic imagery."

Kitty Shepherd, based at the Mill Studio near Ford airfield, West Sussex, has worked as a slipware potter for sixteen years, creating hundreds of functional and decorative pots. Until 2002 Kitty was the resident potter at Amberley Museum, near Arundel, and her ten years' experience as a 'performing' potter make her an ideal instructor in this craft. She teaches pottery and art to the prisoners at H.M.P. Ford.

Kitty trained at Chichester and Worthing and describes herself as a medieval artisan wanting to decorate every surface. She is best known for depicting flora and fauna and the natural world, however it is often the norm to find a B52 airplane hidden somewhere in her designs. Her work is fine and calculated in execution and has taken many years to refine into the works she produces today.

Kitty recognizes her own pleasure and satisfaction at seeing beauty in life and art and wishes to share this joy with others.
