Commentary:

Current Hedge Fund Performance: The Tortoise or the Hare?

A principal trait of alternative investments is their ability to capture gains in all market cycles. Hedge funds should be able to maintain consistent - but not necessarily large - positive growth month after month. However, different investment strategies excel at different objectives: a strategy that may generate outsized short-term gains in a particular month are less stellar over the long-term. For instance, Emerging Markets Equities, as the second best performing investment strategy in July, returned 3.813% for the month. Consistency? Time Window Analysis, and specifically the '% Profitable Periods' statistic for this strategy shows that it doesn't consistently post positive returns until the rolling two-year time frame; a long-term approach is obviously required for this strategy even though the average two-year gain is nearly 60%. On the other hand, emerging markets debt strategies gained only 1.220% for July but are consistently positive at the rolling six-month period - and show an average two-year gain of 32%.

At what point do various investment strategies hit 100% positive gains?
