These figures show the real cost of travel insurance claims made from January to December 2008. Those travelling with insufficient or without cover may find themselves out of pocket, should a similar incident happen:

Average cost of claim made per person:
£747 was claimed for a trip cancellation
£770 was claimed for a trip interruption (known as curtailment)
£210 was claimed for stolen or damaged baggage
£1,923 was claimed for legal expenses
£184 was claimed for insect bites (252 cases of insect bites were reported last year)
£491 was claimed for gastroenteritis (314 cases were reported last year mostly in Greece, Spain and Turkey)
