While the large majority of face recognition techniques and implementations are based on 2D image processing, 3D face recognition technology is becoming an increasingly important component of the face recognition industry. Recent advances in hardware and software for capturing data to build 3D face models can minimize common sources of degraded performance in 2D recognition systems.
