(PRWEB) September 18, 2005 -- Transportation Riders United (TRU) announces its second annual Ride the Bus Week. During the week of September 26-30, TRU is promoting Greater Detroits extensive transit assets by encouraging community leaders in Greater Detroit to ride the bus. Through Ride-the-Bus Week, TRU works to highlight that transit exists today in Greater Detroit and can work for you. In addition, TRU wants our community leaders to try the bus and see that even in Greater Detroit there are benefits to using transit.

"Our community leaders are on the front line for determining the future of our region. They set an example for everyone in the region," stated Bob Prudhomme, president of Transportation Riders United.

"Greater Detroits transit assets work every day consistent with the Triple-Bottom-Line philosophy. Transit is good for the economy, its good for the environment; and most importantly, it strengthens our existing communities," stated Larry Hands, board member of TRU.

"Our two transit systems, DDOT (Detroit) and SMART (suburban) currently provide mobility to nearly 50 million riders each year, but still remain under-utilized. Much of the reason for under-utilization is the lack of promotion by our planners and leaders, and subsequent lack of awareness by the public. Having our leaders simply riding the bus shows support for using transit and evidences its importance to the region," stated Patty Fedewa, the chair of TRUs riders voice committee and organizer for Ride-the-Bus week.

Over 200 community leaders in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties are receiving invitations to celebrate Ride the Bus Week by trying the bus. TRU has already received confirmations from a number of leaders acknowledging their intention to ride the bus and allowing their name to be published in a list after the event, along with any comments they may have regarding their experience.
