This "Asperger Syndrome: Understanding The Social Issues" seminar will cover an overview of PDD/autism spectrum disorders, characteristics and strategies, and acting socially.

This interactive presentation will begin with a discussion of the characteristics of individuals diagnosed with high-functioning autism or Asperger Syndrome. Areas of deficit and suggested strategies will be addressed. The afternoon will focus on the social issues that confront those with this diagnosis. Through lecture, video clips and hands-on activities, participants will learn a variety of techniques to teach social awareness. Participants will also learn different approaches to building empathy and understanding within the individual’s peer group.

Cindy Schneider earned a B.S. degree in education from West Chester State University, and is dually certified in elementary and special education K-12. She has done graduate work at West Chester University and Temple University, earning a communication specialist certificate from Temple and an autism certification from Penn State University. A special education teacher of 20 years, she has spent the last five years as an autism consultant, focused on doing research, teaching professionals and supporting teachers in implementing appropriate strategies for students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. She has also spoken at the “Pennsylvania Council for Exceptional Children” conference, and has done private consultative work in Delaware, New Jersey and Maryland. Additionally, Ms. Schneider has acted and directed in community theatre for 25 years. Having directed a children’s theatre program for 20 years, she began a theatre program called “Acting Antics” for students diagnosed with HFA and Asperger Syndrome. Ms. Schneider has run workshops in Delaware, Chester, Berks and Montgomery Counties in Pennsylvania. She also directed a theatre program for the Children’s Institute at the National Autism Conference at Penn State University during the past two summers.

This one-day seminar is designed for special education teachers, psychologists, administrators, classroom teachers, instructional aides, principals, vice principals, education attorneys, counselors and parents.
