Using Widgets to Track Website Metrics

Imulus, a design + interactive agency has announced an ingenious method of integrating live business web-metrics with the desktop. Earlier this August, Yahoo! announced the acquisition of Konfabulator, an alternative tool to the web browser, used specifically for gathering collections of Internet data in small programs called Widgets. Widgets can be used to track Internet news stories, report on the weather, gather stock data and view web-cams right on the desktop while you work.

"We decided to build widget accessibility into our web-based applications," states George Morris, Imulus Client Services Manager. Imulus Widgets allows companies to view Internet customer activity in real-time without needing to analyze log files or open a browser window. The Metrics Widget displays information about web customers, where they came from, how they arrived at your site, where they have gone on your site and what connection they used to reach the site. In addition, the Widgets are intelligent enough to tell the difference between robot and human visitors.

"We've been using this technology for over a year now, but now that Konfabulator is free, Widgets become an attractive option for businesses which want real-time insight into their website performance," states John Skufca, Technology Director. Imulus shares Yahoo's vision of an Internet which is used by many applications, not just web-browsers and email clients. There are a number of new widget applications under production at Imulus, with plans to role out a free service to introduce the power of integrating widgets for business purposes.
