Bourbon Street Comes to Houston: Thousands Raised At Saint Arnold Brewing Company's New Orleans-Style Celebration

Laissez les bon temps rouler! Fundraiser at Houston Brewery Aids Victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Houston-based Saint Arnold Brewing Company, the oldest microbrewery in Texas, brought a little bit of Bourbon Street to Houston recently to raise funds for the American Red Cross. Funds raised at the event will aid victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The brewery held a New Orleans-style celebration that attracted more than 350 people who were all too happy to fill their glasses and open their wallets for hurricane relief. In addition to donating 100 percent of the price of admission, the brewery donated all the profits from glass and shirt sales to the American Red Cross. The total amount raised was more than $7,700.

Wagner decided to open his doors and his taps to celebrate the outpouring of goodwill that swept through the Houston metropolitan area in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

“Now that charity fatigue is starting to set in, it’s important to find creative ways to encourage people to keep donating, so it was natural for us to do our small part to help,” said Saint Arnold Brewing Company’s Founder and CEO Brock Wagner. “Some might question whether it’s fitting to celebrate in the face of tragedy, but we believe it’s perfectly appropriate, considering New Orleans has a long history of finding reasons to party in good times and not-so-good times.”

Wagner has roots in New Orleans. His great-great-great grandfather Ferdinand settled there in 1836 and promptly opened a bar.

Saint Arnold Brewing thanks the Zydeco Dots for donating their music and Cactus Records for donating the proceeds from memorabilia sales.
