Lichtman Elected President of American Society for Surgery of the Hand

David M. Lichtman, MD, Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at John Peter Smith Hospital and the University of North Texas Health Science Center, was elected the 60th President of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) at the Society’s September Annual Meeting in San Antonio. Dr. Lichtman also serves as the director of the JPS orthopedic surgery residency program, a position he has held since 1998.

Lichtman, MD, Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at John Peter Smith Hospital and the University of North Texas Health Science Center, was elected the 60th President of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) at the Society’s September Annual Meeting in San Antonio. Dr. Lichtman also serves as the director of the JPS orthopedic surgery residency program, a position he has held since 1998.

A Hand Society member since 1978, Dr. Lichtman will lead the Society’s 2005-2006 15-member Council.

A graduate of the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center, he interned at the University of Minnesota Hospitals, completed a residency at Naval Hospital Oakland and a fellowship in hand surgery in San Diego. A retired rear admiral in the United States Navy, Dr. Lichtman served as the Commanding Officer of the Naval Hospitals at Oakland and Bethesda.

A frequent lecturer on hand and wrist problems, he is the author of the widely used textbook, “The Wrist and Its Disorders”. He is immediate past president of the Society of Military Consultants to the Armed Forces, serves as a member of the Orthopedic Residency Review Committee of the American Council for Graduate Medical Education, and as an examiner for the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

The mission of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand is to advance the science and practice of hand surgery through education, research and advocacy on behalf of patients and practitioners. Founded in 1946, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand is the oldest medical specialty society in the United States devoted entirely to continuing medical education related to hand surgery. The ASSH began as a select group of only 35 founding members and now includes over 1,800 members from around the world.
