Eric Frey Beats The Odds Over The Growing Addiction of Oxycontin How online poker helped Eric beat his addiction to the prescription painkiller Oxycontin. (PRWEB) October 11, 2005 -- For most people painkillers are a miracle that allows them to carry out their everyday activities, and minimize their suffering. They are not thought of as "bad" because a doctor prescribes them, and they are not illegal.
Eric Frey started out with 20mg of oycontin and eventually increased to 400mg a day. This can be an expensive habit since the drug can cost up to $1 per milligram. Eric's waist dropped from 42 inches to 36 inches in two months, he also faked back pains and got a local doctor to write him prescriptions for the oxy. Eric has since given up the drug thanks to online poker. Just as oxy is on the rise so is online poker. Eric has learned that he enjoys playing online poker just as much as he used to enjoy getting "high" off of oxycontin, Eric never thought he would be able to find a substitute for the drug, but he truly has found something in poker that keeps his mind occupied.
According to an April 9, 2001 Newsweek article (playing with painkillers), the sale and prescription of painkillers have tripled since 1996. Doctors have started paying more attention to pain, and using painkillers more often to make the patient comfortable.
But along with all of this, there has been an increase in the abuse of painkillers. It is estimated that four million Americans use prescription painkillers for "non-medical " purposes. One of the most dangerous and fastest growing prescription drugs is oxycontin.
Oxycontin was first introduced in 1996, and is made from oxycodone, which is a main ingredient in drugs such as percocet and percodan. People abuse this drug by crushing it and snorting it, which sends a massive rush to the brain. Oxycontin locks into a cell receptor called mu, which is found mostly in the brain, spinal cord, and gut. Once this happens, it blocks pain signals from nerves and gives the person a feeling of well being. Eric hopes the readers of this article can find something to occupy their mind as he has, it really has changed his life. http://www.pokersnation.com
