Earthy Landscapes and Fantastic Chimeras by Alexandra K. Corbin

"I've Never Seen Anything Like It," said Ruthie gazing at the remarkable paper intarsia Landscapes of Alexandra K. Corbin. See Ms. Corbin's affecting landscapes and cutouts, now, at the Studio/Gallery St. Marks in Brooklyn through Nov. 1st.

Alexandra K. Corbin, whose work is in the collections of the Museum of Natural History and the Terra Museum among others, has a new show at Gallery/Studio 64, on St. Marks Avenue and Park Slope in Brooklyn.

This is her sixth show of the year, a prolific one at that. But all her work is new. Known for her chimerical cutouts that trigger endless stories, these large paper views represent her love of paper intarsia.

This process is much like wood marquetry where each segment of colored paper interlocks with others without any overlap. It is a tedious process but one that Ms. Corbin enjoys, "...because it restricts the artist. You have to make a decision and stick with it. It's unlike painting and mixed media which invites changes and overlays, not so with this. Thought, planning and execution are key."

Ms. Corbin creates entertainment media for children with original content (see http://www.coryandcarlos.com)illustrates and writes. Her work has appeared on PBS and cable networks. She has taught art at Cornell and NYU and has learned what works best for her. She likes to say that when you get used to telling students what's what all the time it has a nasty habit of making you lazy with your own standards. So she tends to teach every few years with long intervals between.

Her work is on display through the end of October at one of the most delightful new galleries in Brooklyn. The hours are 12-6, Mon., Thurs- Sundays. for information call 718 855 5943.
