Dwindling Returns for Older Workers

Jenkins is especially sensitive to the plight of older workers who find themselves job-less for the first time in decades. "Workers in their 20s, 30s and even 40s are still mid-career and have a wide range of options," she notes. But when companies downsize, "They fire mid-level and senior level managers…the employees who are likely to be over-50 and equally likely to find new employment opportunities extremely limited," says Jenkins.

The most recent "Worker Displacement Study" from the Department of Labor bears our Jenkins' concerns. Statistics reveal that while 82 percent of workers aged 24-54 will be re-employed if they lose their job, the figure drops steeply to 60 percent for workers aged 55-64, and "plummets to 35 percent for workers over 65," Jenkins reports.

Former First Lady Address Issue

At a recent luncheon hosted by The Forum of Washington Women, keynote speaker and possible Presidential candidate Sen. Hillary R. Clinton was also focused on the changing face of today's workplace. Jenkins, who attended the event, says, "Sen. Clinton was concerned that while the national GDP has an upward curve, the country hasn't created any new management level jobs in four-and-a-half years."

"Today’s economy is forcing more and more people to work for themselves," says Jenkins. As the face of the workplace changes, workers and especially older workers suddenly find themselves in for a change. The good news is that for many people, it's a change for the better.
