PLANT CITY, FL (PRWEB) November 11, 2005 -- How far would you go to taste some of the world’s best barbecue? For the Smokin Triggers and Wild Bunch Butt Burners, distance never crossed their minds. Five states including Alabama, Texas, Georgia, Kansas and Florida will be represented at the Third Annual Plant City Pig Jam State BBQ Championship on Saturday, November 19 in Plant City, Fla.

Wild Bunch Butt Burners from Atmore, Ala. and Smokin Triggers, who will make the journey from Texas, will be competing for the third year in a row for the Grill Master title. Each team will have tough competition as it competes against some of the toughest barbecue experts in the country.

The Pig Jam State BBQ Championship has become one of the most popular barbecue contests in the South, with more than 9,000 spectators and 50 teams expected to attend. Some of the other teams participating in this year’s competition are Bonesmokers, Swamp Boys BBQ Team, Smokin Butts and Buttrub.com.

Teams consist of a chief cook and as many assistants as desired. Each team will be trying to create a unique barbecue style to distinguish their food from the rest of the competition.

Last year’s champion Don Will, from Team Smokers Wild out of Paola, Kan., will return again this year to defend his title.

“When news of this year’s Pig Jam came my way, I was sure to be one of the first to sign up,” said Will. “The Plant City Chamber has done a great job with developing this competition; I wouldn’t miss it.”

Teams will contend in the professional, amateur and kids’ barbecue competition. Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) certified judges will blind taste test and select the best barbecue in four categories: chicken, pork ribs, pork shoulder and beef brisket. The Grand Champion will be the team which scores the most points in each category.

The barbecue will be judged on appearance, taste and tenderness. Winners in each category will earn trophies, prize money, boasting rights and an experience of a lifetime.

The Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the Third Annual Plant City Pig Jam at the Randy L. Larson Softball Four-Plex, 1810 E. Park Rd. in Plant City, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Patrons will be able to enjoy refreshments while sampling some of the world’s best barbecue at the Budweiser Game Time Arena, sponsored by Pepin Distributors. Cold beer and televised college football games will be available for spectators to enjoy.

Parking is $3 per vehicle for guests; admission is free. Guests can also purchase Pig Bucks, which can be used to purchase some of the great barbecue featured in the competition, as well as t-shirts, snacks, refreshments and more.
