Free Children's e-Books: Student Authors Share Unique Gift With Head Start Students

Fourteen seventh-grade students traveled to Denver last week to read and distribute their original stories published as ebooks to Head Start students. The project is a partnership between Conrad Ball Middle School, RealeBooks.com, and Denver’s Great Kids Head Start, a program of the Mayor’s Office for Education and Children.

Denver (PRWEB) November 21, 2005 -- Denver’s Head Start preschool children received a unique gift after story time last week: they took home an e-book written by a seventh grader in Loveland.

Under the direction of Conrad Ball Middle School science teacher Lynn Gilbert and English/language arts teacher Tami Wolff, 88 industrious seventh graders wrote over 40 ebooks using RealeWriter interactive educational software and published the books online at http://myrealebooks.com/?s=conball

The students invite members of the public, especially those with young children, to read their free ebooks online.

These authors also became epublishers, printing 1200 copies of the ebooks--enough so that every child enrolled in the City’s Head Start program will receive a book of their own for their home library.

“Each one of us has the power to positively influence the lives of others,” said Gilbert. “If every one of us followed the example of these fine young people at Conrad Ball Middle School and printed a handful of e-books to share with young children, we’d make a meaningful impact on education in the state.”

“These Loveland students graciously thought beyond the boundaries of their school and even their city when they designed this community service learning project,” said Mayor John Hickenlooper. “Because of their generosity, Denver preschoolers will receive new books to read with their families.”

Fostering a love of reading early in a child’s life is an essential ingredient to success in school and beyond, and studies show access to books is critical to reading development.
