Consumers Warned To Be Wary of Online e-Greeting Cards This Holiday Season

SpyCop today announced that as the holiday season draws closer, computer users should be very wary of opening Internet e-Greeting Cards without checking to be sure they were sent from someone that they know and trust. The commercial monitoring spyware industry has produced some carefully designed little products that can be easily smuggled into anyone's system while they view such a greeting card message.

Deep Brook, NS (PRWEB) December 6, 2005 -- Microsoft's new Antispyware product appears to be sadly lacking when it comes to protection its users from spy software. That's what SpyCop Founder Grey McKenzie said during a recent teleconference. "Microsoft may do well detecting adware but when it comes to keylogger type spy software products they have a long way to go."

Spy software products have been sold over the Internet for years as a way for computer users to monitor their children's computer use or even an employees computer use. Unfortunately says McKenzie, this type of secret monitoring software can U is used in all sorts of nasty ways from identity theft to checking out what your spouse is doing online when you're not there. The big problem he says is spy software will sit invisible on any computer while acting like a recording studio capturing screenshots, emails, chats, literally everything done on a computer.

McKenzie's company SpyCop, decided to let the SpyCop lab test the major spyware detection products out there starting with Microsoft, and compare their detection databases against the SpyCop detection database. Microsoft was the first one tested and found they failed to detect 81% of the SpyCop database.

The SpyCop database is composed of commercial surveillance software only, including keyloggers, screen recorders and other software for sale on the open market. The SpyCop database does not include hacker utilities/trojans/viruses or adware.

All numbers and figures taken directly from analysis of the log file written by the Microsoft scanner in comparison with our database. Unique Product samples Detected by Microsoft: 102 out of 528 (19.3%) The results show Microsoft detected approximately 19% of the SpyCop commercial spy database.
