White Plains, NY (PRWEB) November 16, 2009

Hospice and Palliative Care of Westchester (HPCW), a private, non-profit healthcare agency specializing in end-of-life home care, was awarded Honorable Mention for its submission to the 2009 National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) Photography, Writing, Film Contest. The film, “Hospice Volunteers - In Their Own Words,” was created and produced by HPCW volunteer Tom Warren of Dobbs Ferry, NY. More than 300 films were entered.

According to the NHPCO, the contest focused on films that serve to educate hospice and palliative care professionals, volunteers and other professionals who provide end-of-life care for patients and families. “The judges were impressed by the number of excellent films using staff, patients and families to share important lessons about quality of end of life care,” said J. Donald Schumacher, president/CEO of NHPCO.

Previously a photojournalist, Warren is fulfilled by his volunteer efforts. “Now I understand why people volunteer. It is absolutely liberating – to give without expecting anything in return. I get back more than I give and am surprised every time,” he said.

“Our entry is special because it was developed by one of our dedicated volunteers,” said Kate Colburn, M.A., HPCW Executive Director. “Tom’s film is especially effective in recruiting and educating volunteers, because it so effectively describes the hospice experience in the words of volunteers themselves.”

Contest winners were announced at the NHPCO Clinical Team Conference in Denver, Colorado. Winning photos, essays, and poetry, and a listing of the winning films will be posted on the Awards & Contests section of http://www.nhpco.org and linked in the organization’s weekly member e-communication.
