Author Lisa Dunn-Dern was a staff writer for the HBO-Fox TV series “ROC,” and directs and produces large-scale children’s theater productions in Los Angeles. “I wanted to walk into the children’s section of a bookstore and find a book with a family that looks like mine,” says Dunn-Dern, who is African American and happily married to a prominent Hollywood entertainment attorney who happens to be Caucasian. They have one daughter, now 13, and make their home in Los Angeles, Calif., and Martha’s Vineyard, Mass. “I didn’t find any, so I wrote one,” she says cheerfully.
