Attorney Applauds Legislative Efforts to Strengthen Construction Safety Enforcement

Houston attorney Brad T. Wyly says responsible parties must be held liable for construction injuries.

Houston, TX (PRWEB) November 18, 2009

A Houston attorney is applauding new legislative efforts to bolster construction site safety and decrease on-the-job deaths and injuries.

“An unacceptable number of innocent, hard-working men and women are injured or killed every day in Texas and across the country,” said Brad T. Wyly, a Houston lawyer who represents injured workers. “The regulations designed to protect these men and women need to be strengthened, and enforcement of these rules must be improved.”

An average of 16 construction workers die every day -- and more workers die in Texas than in any other state, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Proposed legislation, the Protecting America’s Workers Act of 2009, is intended to decrease deaths and injuries by updating and strengthening construction safety regulations. The legislation would:

  • Expand the number and types of workers protected by federal safety regulations;
  • Increase penalties for those responsible for violating regulations;
  • Improve whistleblower protections for workers who report unsafe conditions;
  • Increase the ability of workers and their families to hold dangerous employers accountable.
“Workers deserve more protections from unsafe workplaces,” Wyly said. “Employers who create dangerous workplaces should know they can be held accountable for the injuries and the deaths that result.”
