Katrina Pets Now on 2006 Calendar

The striking faces of almost 20 pets, abandoned in New Orleans during the initial weeks following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, now grace the pages of a calendar for the year 2006.

(PRWEB) December 22, 2005 -- The striking faces of almost 20 pets, abandoned in New Orleans during the initial weeks following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, now grace the pages of a just-published calendar for the year 2006. They represent the countless pets that were left behind but helped by dedicated volunteers from AnimalRescueNewOrleans.com (ARNO). All proceeds from the calendar will benefit that organization.

Created by C. Saige Cox, an architecture intern from New Mexico and ARNO volunteer, the Animal Rescue New Orleans 2006 calendar is a collection of images which she says were captured by “doctors and veterinarians who were there in the first wave of volunteers, 1-800-Save-A-Pet.com co-founders David Meyer and Pia Salk, vet technicians and regular volunteers like myself.” The photographs are accompanied by heartwarming stories of heroic rescues and poignant observations.

She says the images of cats, dogs and even a horse are tender. “There is a certain helplessness and innocence that I hope will remind people that animals are dependant upon us for their care.”

The calendar, she adds, reflects the progression of events. “The early months of the calendar are the early days after Katrina – the evacuation, the rescues, the shelters and the transport. Then there is the fostering and adoption and the reunions.”

Her own dog, Shanti, a four month old bull terrier she first fostered and then adopted, is the “face” of November. “For me, having Shanti is a daily reminder not to take what I have for granted,” she says. “We don’t always know what life holds for us and what choices we’ll have to make under what circumstances.”

AnimalRescueNewOrleans.com is a grassroots animal rescue group that sprung up in the aftermath of Katrina and currently operates in New Orleans providing food and water, rescuing, reuniting and finding foster homes for animals impacted by Hurricane Katrina.
