How to Lose Your Clutter in 10 Days -- Professional Organizer Sets Challenge to Get Rid of it

Professional Organizer Cyndi Seidler launches campaign to place a nationwide bet with individuals that they can lose their clutter. Light-hearted and fun, the tips on how to lose clutter in 10 days may inspire just about anyone.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 9, 2006 -- Who do we know who has attachments to belongings that don't belong anymore? Who is clingy with their stuff? Who appears needy and even touchy-feely with it? Do these behaviors sound familiar?

Inspired by the movie concept "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days," professional organizer Cyndi Seidler got the idea of using an analogy of the principles from the movie that addresses the classic mistakes people make in relationships to the classic mistakes people make keeping stuff that clutters their life.

For the New Year, Seidler decided to make a bet with those suffering with too much stuff. She launched a campaign on the web site Organized-Living.com, setting the challenge for people to lose the clutter. The bet: to pick a cluttered room and lose it (the clutter) in 10 days.

"I was just sitting in my office trying to figure out a topic for my blog when the movie "How to Loose a Guy in 10 Days" came on the television set," Seidler explained. "Then, all of a sudden it came to me: The correlations between the mistakes women make regarding men to the mistakes people make relating to their stuff. So, I switched the volume from mute and began to listen."

After taking extensive notes from the movie, Seidler thought she would tackle people with a little humor to get them to tackle their clutter. She would place a bet and see who would take the challenge. To do that, she realized she would have to give them some really absurd tips to help them along in getting rid of stuff. She offered these words of persuasion:

1.    When faced with the problem of hanging onto any belonging that's been sitting around too long, hidden among so much other stuff that it's never been noticed or missed, get rid of it.

2.    If you find that you're jealous of the stuff that's just sitting around while you run around, get rid of it.

3.    If you pick up an item that makes you start whining because you think you would hurt it if you didn't have it around anymore, get rid of it.

4.    When you're evaluating something and start baby-talking to it (or the person next to you), realize that it has transgressed you. Before you get humiliated further, get rid of it.

5.    Just because something has been around a long time, it doesn't mean it has to be treasured as a keepsake when you're just keeping it for the sake of keeping it. It's time to get rid of it.

6.    While you find yourself obsessing over an object that's really just "stuff," think about all the space you'd be freeing up where it's been sitting, and get rid of it.

7.    In determining whether to keep something or not, and you find yourself talking about old times this represents and all the memories it brings, even when you've got a new life and that old life is no longer part of this one, get rid of it.

8.    If you thought you got rid of an item and find it keeps coming back, realize that it's probably a new one that you had replaced with the old one. If the old one wasn't any good, what makes you think the new one will make your life any better? Get rid of it.

The clutter challenge is to extend through the month of January, deemed Get Organized Month by the National Association of Professional Organizers. The bet begins from the time a person joins the bet to ten days following it. Those who win the bet will be awarded a special prize that rewards them for their efforts (although not a gift that adds more stuff). Losers will be asked to write an essay on "How to Keep Clutter for Years" and turn it in to Cyndi Seidler for study purposes. Full details of entering the bet are at www.organizedlifestyles.com.
