New Genealogy Search Engine Searches New York State

The GenSphere genealogy search engine is now available, searching free online sources for census records, birth, marriage and death records by county and state.

Johnna Armstrong and Paul Woods have announced the debut of their free genealogy search engine, GenSphere, now ready for beta testing at http://www.gensphere.org . The search engine and directory currently feature over 600,000 pages in 400 fully searchable, free web sites for the state of New York alone, with more being added every day. All indexed pages are categorized by state, county, by record type and by topic. Searches can be filtered to a particular location, record type and topic in any combination to narrow the search to just the pages of greatest interest.

“We plan to roll out several more states by the summer, and cover the entire USA by mid 2007” said GenSphere ( http://www.gensphere.org ) creator Johnna Armstrong, an avid genealogist and website designer. “We’re waiting until we have enough content in each state before we put it out in front of people. Right now it’s just the two of us and a couple of big-hearted friends.”

Indexed sites include census records, birth, marriage, and death records, cemetery records and more. “Its amazing how much information is out there spread across the thousands of personal websites that are maintained by fellow genealogists and local historical societies” said Armstrong.

“One person may have a handful of census transcriptions, another a database of marriage records for three counties, and another a complete set of church records for one denomination across an entire state. Taken individually, these are very tedious to search through -- each one has its own search interface, each one has to be searched separately. But combine them all into one search engine, categorized by state and county, and also by record type, and then it gets incredibly easy to find what you’re looking for.”
